Hexagram 6 · Heaven above, Water below

Conflict 訟

Sòng
disputecautionmediationcompromise

Conflict warns that even when you are right, pushing to the end costs too much. Stay honest, seek a fair mediator and stop halfway instead.

Judgment

You are in the right, but your way is blocked. Being cautious and stopping halfway is good; going all the way to the end brings misfortune. It is favorable to consult the great person, not to cross the great river.

Image

Heaven and water move in opposite directions; this is the picture of conflict. In everything they do, the wise person thinks carefully about the beginning.

What does Conflict mean?

Heaven rises above, water flows below, and the two drift apart. There is danger within and rigidity without. You are at odds with someone or with an institution, or two wishes inside you are pulling against each other. You think you are right, and perhaps you truly are. But the other side thinks the same. Tension like this wears you down, keeps you awake and scatters your attention. Tying everything to this one issue casts a shadow over the rest of your life as well.

If a conflict is pushed all the way, even the winner ends up exhausted. What is advised here is to stay open and honest and look for a middle path. Consulting someone neutral and wise resolves the matter. This is not the time to throw yourself into big risks, big moves or new ventures. The real lesson lies at the beginning: disputes often grow out of things that were not spoken plainly at the start. Make contracts, boundaries and expectations clear from the outset. See your own share in the problem and do not dig in. Taking a step back is sometimes not weakness but the way to get out unharmed. An argument you win may not be worth a friendship you lose. Ask yourself what truly matters and give your strength to that.

What to do now

Do not insist on being right; look for a way out without harm.

Love and relationships

An argument may be growing in the relationship. Pushing to the end just to be proven right wears the bond thin. Talk at a calm moment, and both of you set out to really listen.

Work and money

There is a dispute at work or about money. Instead of lawsuits, quarrels or sharp emails, look for a mediator and a settlement. In new agreements, write every clause out clearly from the start.

The lines

If a line changed (red) in your reading, read only that line. Lines are counted from the bottom up.

  1. First line

Do not drag the matter out. There will be some talk, but if you let go early, the end is good.

  2. Second line

You cannot win this conflict; withdraw and go home. Thanks to this, the three hundred households of your town come to no harm; your step back protects everyone.

  3. Third line

Living on old virtue. Be content with what is yours; there is danger, but the end is good. If you serve someone above you, do not claim the credit for the work.

  4. Fourth line

You cannot win this conflict; turn back and accept your lot. If you change your stance and turn toward peace, good fortune follows.

  5. Fifth line

Bringing the case before a just person. Taking the matter to a fair arbiter brings great good fortune.

  6. Top line

Someone gives you a leather belt, but it is taken from you three times before the morning is over. What is won through conflict does not last.
