Dispersion 渙

Dispersion is like wind melting the ice on the water. It speaks of dissolving hardened feelings and old divisions so people can come together again.

Judgment

Dispersion brings success. The king approaches his temple. It serves you to cross the great water and to stay steady in what is right.

Image

Wind blows over the water. The ancient kings made offerings to the Most High and built temples. The wise person likewise gathers what has scattered around a shared value.

What does Dispersion mean?

When the spring wind blows over frozen water, the ice melts and the water flows again. This sign speaks of what has hardened breaking up. Sometimes this is a good thing: hurt feelings, stubbornness, selfishness, and the walls that keep people apart melt away. At other times a community, family, or team faces the danger of falling apart and needs something to bring it back together. In both cases the answer is not to break the hardness by force but to melt it slowly. The wind does not smash the ice. It thaws it with warmth.

At such times the ancient kings built temples and gathered people around a shared faith and purpose. For you the question is this: what shared value binds you and those around you? Remembering it, and reminding others of it, gathers what has scattered. If you feel scattered inside, bring your energy together around one meaningful goal. You may need to set aside selfish interests and step out of petty group politics. Like crossing the great water, this takes courage. But the one who dissolves the hardness frees both themselves and others. Water that begins to flow comes alive again.

What to do now

Let go of the hurt that hardens you, and remember what you share.

Love and relationships

The coldness or hurt between you is ready to melt. If you set your pride aside and take the first step, the ice will thaw. Remembering your shared dreams and values renews your bond.

Work and money

If your team or partnership has come apart, define the shared goal again. Getting past fights over personal interest saves the work. The ground is right for a bold venture or a big project.

The lines

If a line changed (red) in your reading, read only that line. Lines are counted from the bottom up.

  1. First line

He rushes to help with the support of a strong horse. Stepping in early, before the scattering grows, brings good fortune.

  2. Second line

In the midst of dispersion, you hurry to what supports you. Finding your inner footing and the people you trust makes regret fade.

  3. Third line

He dissolves his own self. Letting go of selfish concerns and devoting yourself to a larger work brings no regret.

  4. Fourth line

He breaks away from his own group, and this brings great good fortune. The scattering turns into a gathering as great as a hill. This is a path ordinary people would not think of.

  5. Fifth line

A great call spreads everywhere like sweat, and the king shares out his treasury among the people. A bold decision that brings everyone together brings no blame.

  6. Top line

He disperses the blood, goes far away, and gets clear of danger. Keeping yourself and your loved ones away from harm is no fault.
