Hexagram 38 · Fire above, Lake below

Opposition 睽

Kuí
oppositiondifferencemisunderstandingsmall steps

Opposition describes a time when people and wishes drift apart. Accepting differences and agreeing on small matters is the best way forward here.

Judgment

There is good fortune in small matters. Large shared undertakings are hard for now, because the two sides face different directions. Move ahead in small, careful steps.

Image

Fire above, the lake below. Fire burns upward and water flows down. The wise person keeps what is shared while accepting what is different.

What does Opposition mean?

Fire burns upward and the lake rests below. Each follows its own nature, yet they move apart. Opposition describes a time when people or desires are pulled in different directions. Like two sisters living in the same house without understanding each other, even those who are close can become strangers. Misunderstandings multiply, and people start seeing faults in one another that are not there. Insisting on being right at such a time only widens the gap. Staying calm and listening builds a bridge.

Do not try to form big alliances now or bring everyone around to one view. It will not work for now, and it will tire you out. Look instead for agreement on small things. Difference is not always hostility. Two separate views can sometimes complete each other. You may find that the person you approached with suspicion actually wants to come closer, not to hurt you. Do not chase what slips out of your hands. If it is truly yours, it will come back. Without giving up your own integrity, respect the other person's right to be different. The tension eases with time, the way rain after a long dry spell clears the air.

What to do now

Do not try to convince everyone. Look for one small piece of common ground.

Love and relationships

You and the one you love may want different things. Instead of trying to change each other, talk about those differences. If your doubts are growing, first ask what is really going on. A misunderstanding may be playing a bigger part than you think.

Work and money

There are disagreements in partnerships and in the team. Do not commit to big joint projects now. Move forward with small, clear agreements. Listening to someone who sees things differently may show you a risk you missed.

The lines

If a line changed (red) in your reading, read only that line. Lines are counted from the bottom up.

  1. First line

Regret fades. Do not chase the lost horse, it comes back on its own. If you meet someone with bad intentions, do not ignore them. Greet them politely and there is no mistake.

  2. Second line

You meet your lord in a narrow lane, in an unexpected place. Where formal paths are closed, a small and natural encounter opens a door. No mistake.

  3. Third line

Your wagon is dragged back, your oxen are halted, and all sorts of trouble come your way. The start is bad, but the end is good.

  4. Fourth line

You are isolated amid opposition. You meet an honest person who thinks as you do, and you trust them. There is danger, but no mistake.

  5. Fifth line

Regret fades. Your kinsman bites through the skin, meaning a real closeness is forming. What harm could there be in going forward?

  6. Top line

In your isolation you see everything wrong: a pig covered in mud, a wagon full of ghosts. First you draw your bow, then you lower it, because the one coming is not an enemy but someone seeking closeness. When the rain falls, all is well.
