Hexagram 22 · Mountain above, Fire below

Grace 賁

Bì
beautyformsimplicitypresentation

Grace is fire glowing at the foot of the mountain. Beauty and good form help in small matters, but base big decisions on substance and simplicity.

Judgment

Grace brings success. It is favorable to make progress in small matters. A beautiful appearance makes things easier, but big decisions are not made on appearance alone.

Image

Fire burns at the foot of the mountain. The wise person handles daily affairs clearly and in good order, but does not dare to decide great cases by appearance alone.

What does Grace mean?

The fire burning at the foot of the mountain lights up the rocks and trees with a lovely glow. But this light does not reach far. Grace is like this. It adds color to life, softens relationships and makes things more pleasant. Form matters; order, courtesy and beauty bring people closer. But form does not replace substance. A beautiful wrapping does not change what is inside. Appearance draws people first, but what keeps them near is sincerity and real worth. Finding the balance between the two is now in your hands. Loving adornment is not a fault; putting it in place of substance is.

You may be in a period when you give weight to appearance, presentation and impressions. There is nothing wrong with that. Still, look at what lies beneath the decoration. Real worth lies within. Adorning something makes it look better, but it does not make it better. In small matters this grace helps you. In big decisions, rely on reality, not on appearance. With time you will see that the deepest grace comes from simplicity. When you let go of show and bring your essence forward, you look more beautiful.

What to do now

Make the surface beautiful, but do not neglect the substance; choose what is simple.

Love and relationships

Attraction and pleasant moments are at the fore. Enjoy them, but do not attach yourself only to looks or sweet words. Simplicity and sincerity last longer than elaborate gestures.

Work and money

Presentation, branding, design and first impressions matter now. Presenting your product or yourself well helps your work. But do not neglect the quality of the real work, and do not make big investments based on dazzling promises.

The lines

If a line changed (red) in your reading, read only that line. Lines are counted from the bottom up.

  1. First line

He adorns his toes, leaves the carriage and walks. Leaving the easy, showy way and moving on your own feet is honorable. Humility suits you.

  2. Second line

He adorns his beard. The adornment moves together with what it belongs to. Do not spend yourself only on outward looks; see what you are part of.

  3. Third line

Adorned and glistening. Lasting steadiness in what is right brings good fortune. Everything is lovely and pleasant, but do not let this comfort lull you.

  4. Fourth line

Adorned or plain? A white horse runs as if it had wings. The one coming is not a robber but a suitor. You want to choose simplicity over show; the person approaching comes with good intentions.

  5. Fifth line

Adornment in the garden on the hill. The roll of silk is small and modest. It may look embarrassing, but in the end good fortune comes. A sincere effort without show finds its worth at last.

  6. Top line

Simple, white adornment. No blame. The highest grace is a simplicity that needs no decoration. Being yourself is enough.
