Hexagram 17 · Lake above, Thunder below

Following 隨

Suí
adaptationflexibilitytrustrest

Following asks you to adapt to the moment instead of forcing your will. Choose carefully whom and what you follow, and people will follow you in turn.

Judgment

Following brings great success, as long as you do not stray from what is right. Whoever follows a right path makes no mistake. But choose well whom and what you follow.

Image

Thunder rests in the middle of the lake. When evening comes, the wise person goes home and rests, not resisting the course of time.

What does Following mean?

This situation calls more for adapting than for leading. Thunder moves below, and the lake ripples with joy above. The strong one holds back and makes room for the gentler one. That is why people follow willingly, not by force. Following here is not submission. It means seeing what the moment asks for and acting accordingly. First you adapt, and then others adapt to you. For this you need to keep your heart open, see the needs of others and set your own ambition aside. Whoever does not know how to follow cannot lead anyone. True leadership grows from here.

What is asked of you is not to cling stubbornly to old habits. Conditions have changed, and you need to bend as well. But being carried off by every wind is not right either. Whom you follow and what you pursue define you. If you hold on to something without worth, you lose what has worth. If there is a firm sense of right inside you, adapting does not make you smaller. On the contrary, it lets people trust you. If the time to rest has come, rest. You do not have to push everything at once; gathering strength is also part of the road.

What to do now

Watch what you follow; go after what is right and let the rest go.

Love and relationships

Instead of imposing your own wishes, listen to your partner's rhythm. Adapting is not giving yourself up; it is choosing to walk together. Still, do not follow someone who goes against your values.

Work and money

You are in a period where you need to adapt to new management, a new system or the direction of the market. Following someone you trust who knows the work pays off. Do not compromise your principles for short-term gain.

The lines

If a line changed (red) in your reading, read only that line. Lines are counted from the bottom up.

  1. First line

The standards are changing. If you stay with what is right, it goes well. Going out the gate and mixing with different people brings success; do not settle only for the views of your close circle.

  2. Second line

Whoever clings to the little boy loses the grown man. If you bind yourself to what is easy and near, you miss what could truly carry you forward.

  3. Third line

Whoever clings to the grown man lets go of the little boy. Choosing what is valuable means giving some things up. You find what you seek, as long as you stand firm in what is right.

  4. Fourth line

Followers are won, but there is danger in it. People may be approaching you for their own interest. If you act with sincerity and a clear mind, there is no mistake.

  5. Fifth line

Sincere trust in what is good brings good fortune. If you bind yourself to what is truly good and right, that bond will carry you.

  6. Top line

Firmly bound and not let go. The king makes an offering on the western mountain. A bond so deep has been formed that it no longer breaks; this loyalty carries a sacred worth.
