Hexagram 61 · Wind above, Lake below

Inner Truth 中孚

Zhōng Fú
sinceritytrustunderstandingconsistency

Inner Truth is sincerity that touches the heart, like wind over a lake. It shows how honesty from within reaches even the hardest people to reach.

Judgment

Sincerity that reaches even pigs and fishes brings good fortune. It serves you to cross the great water. Staying steady in what is right helps you.

Wind blows over the lake. The wise person discusses criminal cases with care and delays sentences of death.

What does Inner Truth mean?

The center of this sign is empty: two soft lines stand between firm lines on the outside. This describes an open heart, free of prejudice. Wind moves the surface of the lake in an unseen way, and inner trust works the same way. Real sincerity reaches much deeper than words. The ancient text speaks of pigs and fishes, meaning even the beings hardest to understand. Earning trust like this takes time, but once earned, it is not easily shaken.

If you are trying to persuade someone, solve a problem, or reach an agreement, rely on sincerity, not tricks or pressure. First try to understand the other person and see through their eyes. This is why the wise person delays a death sentence: they want to understand a person's heart before passing judgment. What is asked of you is that your inside and outside be the same. There should be no gap between what you say and what you do. This consistency makes even the hardest crossings possible. But be careful: sincerity should not get mixed up with showy words or the wish to prove yourself right. A quiet, deep trust reaches more people than one proclaimed out loud.

What to do now

Keep your inside and outside as one. Sincerity opens even the most firmly shut door.

Love and relationships

Trust and sincerity come to the fore in your relationship. Saying openly what comes from your heart deepens your bond. Instead of trying to change the other person, try to understand them.

Work and money

In business relationships, honesty and reliability are your greatest capital. A hard negotiation or settlement comes loose when you try to understand the other side. The ground is right for taking an important step.

The lines

If a line changed (red) in your reading, read only that line. Lines are counted from the bottom up.

  1. First line

Being prepared and solid within brings good fortune. Harboring hidden aims and setting your eyes elsewhere robs you of peace.

  2. Second line

A crane calls in the shade and its young answer: I have a fine cup, and I will share it with you. A voice from the heart finds those close to it, even from afar.

  3. Third line

He finds a companion. Now he beats the drum, now he stops, now he weeps, now he sings. When you tie your happiness to someone else, your feelings rise and fall.

  4. Fourth line

The moon is nearly full, and one horse of the team goes astray. Letting go of some ties as you turn toward a higher aim is no fault.

  5. Fifth line

A sincere trust that binds everyone together. This firm bond brings no blame.

  6. Top line

The crowing of the rooster rises to heaven. When words go beyond the truth, they ring hollow. Persisting in this brings misfortune.
