The Wanderer 旅

Lǚ
journeyimpermanencehumilitycaution

The Wanderer is a passing position, like fire burning on a mountain. It speaks of staying humble, careful, and honest when you are in a strange place.

Judgment

The wanderer succeeds in small things. For the one on the road, steadiness and integrity bring good fortune.

Fire burns on the mountain. The wise person is clear-sighted and careful in imposing penalties, and does not let cases drag on.

What does The Wanderer mean?

Fire on the mountain does not stay in one place. It moves quickly, burning the grass as it goes. This sign likewise describes an unsettled, temporary situation. You may be in a new city, a new job, an unfamiliar circle, or a period in between in your life. The wanderer has no great power and no deep roots. What opens doors for them is courtesy, reliability, and knowing their limits. No one knows them, and their past or title means little here. So every action they take draws more attention.

That is why the text speaks of success in small things. Big claims, harsh manners, and arrogance leave the wanderer alone. Be humble but not without worth, open but not naive. Take care of the place where you are staying and the people beside you. Respect the rules of the place you are in without losing your own values. In this period you learn to tell the passing from the lasting. Not belonging anywhere can feel hard, but it gives you a sharper eye and flexibility. The mark you leave depends less on where you go than on how you behave. Solve problems without blowing them up or dragging them out, and keep going.

What to do now

In a place where you are a stranger, keep your courtesy and your care.

Love and relationships

Relationships may stand on temporary or uncertain ground. There may be long distance or a new acquaintance. Be kind and honest, but do not expect to put down roots right away. In time, what is lasting will become clear.

Work and money

You may be on a temporary project, in a new setting, or in work that involves travel. Take small but solid steps and get along well with those around you. This is not the time for big risks or lasting commitments.

The lines

If a line changed (red) in your reading, read only that line. Lines are counted from the bottom up.

  1. First line

The wanderer busies himself with trifles and belittles himself. Getting caught up in worthless details and turning petty brings trouble.

  2. Second line

The wanderer reaches an inn with his money at his side and gains a loyal young servant. Your calm, honest bearing gives you a safe refuge and support.

  3. Third line

The inn where the wanderer is staying burns down, and he loses his servant's loyalty. Arrogance and harshness put everything you rely on at risk.

  4. Fourth line

The wanderer rests in a shelter and finds his goods and his axe, yet his heart is not at peace. You have managed to protect yourself, but you still feel you do not belong.

  5. Fifth line

He shoots a pheasant with the first arrow, and the arrow is lost. With a small sacrifice you win acceptance. In the end, praise and a post come your way.

  6. Top line

The bird's nest burns. The wanderer laughs at first, then weeps and wails. He loses his cow through carelessness. Arrogance and indifference bring misfortune.
