Hexagram 34 · Thunder above, Heaven below

Great Power 大壯

Dà Zhuàng
powerrestraintintegritypatience

Great Power is about using strength on the right path and with measure once it gathers in your hands. Its true worth lies in knowing where to stop.

Judgment

Staying firm and upright serves you well. Power is on your side, but power alone is not enough. Strength that ignores what is right ends up wounding the one who holds it.

Image

Thunder rolls high in heaven. The wise person does not take a single step that goes against what is right and proper.

What does Great Power mean?

A great deal of strength has built up inside you and around you. Things are speeding up, your voice is heard, people are listening. At times like this it is easy to feel unstoppable. Great Power points straight at this danger. The more your strength grows, the more it matters how you use it. Not every door opens when you force it. Some come off their hinges and swing back at you. However loudly thunder echoes across the sky, it does not last long. What lasts is the integrity behind the strength. The question to ask yourself is what this power is serving.

This period asks two things of you. First, tie your strength to a worthy aim. Do not do something just because you can. Do it because it truly needs doing. Second, patience. Do not be like the ram that butts its horns into the fence. The harder you push, the more tangled you get. Sometimes waiting lets the obstacle open by itself. Real strength is the strength to hold yourself back. A person in command of themselves gives others confidence too. Use your power quietly and with measure and the results will last. Use it for show and out of stubbornness and you will soon lose what you gained.

What to do now

Instead of showing off your strength, use it in the right place and with measure.

Love and relationships

You may have the upper hand in this relationship, but do not use it to crush the other person. If you must choose between being right and keeping the love, choose the gentler path. Tenderness shown at the moment you are strongest builds the most trust.

Work and money

Your position is strong and opportunities are in front of you. But if you rush ahead and turn everyone against you, you will block your own road. Act openly, honestly, and by the rules. Make the most of a good position through patience, not stubbornness.

The lines

If a line changed (red) in your reading, read only that line. Lines are counted from the bottom up.

  1. First line

Strength has gathered in your toes and you want to charge ahead. This early push is sure to end badly. It is not yet time.

  2. Second line

You stand measured and steady. This attitude brings good fortune.

  3. Third line

The ordinary person relies on force and pushes. The wise person does not. A ram that butts the fence gets its horns caught. If you insist, you put yourself in danger.

  4. Fourth line

Stay firm and regret fades. The fence opens and the horns are free. Your strength carries you like the sturdy axle of a great cart.

  5. Fifth line

You lose the ram in an easy place, which means you let go of your stubbornness. There is no regret in this, only relief.

  6. Top line

The ram has butted the fence and can go neither forward nor back. Forcing it will not help. Accept how hard the situation is, and in the end things turn for the better.
