Hexagram 12 · Heaven above, Earth below

Standstill 否

Pǐ
stagnationwithdrawalintegritypatience

Standstill shows heaven and earth drifting apart and the flow blocked. Step back, keep your integrity and wait quietly until the time turns.

Judgment

In a time of standstill the wrong people come forward, and the perseverance of the wise person finds no response. The great departs, the small approaches.

Image

Heaven and earth do not unite; this is the picture of standstill. The wise person protects themselves from hardship by withdrawing into their inner worth and does not allow themselves to be tempted by honors or gain.

What does Standstill mean?

Heaven is above, earth below, and the two are moving away from each other. Unlike the sign of Peace, there is no meeting here; the flow has stopped. People do not understand one another, effort finds no reward, and decisions are in the wrong hands. In this period outer conditions are not on your side. You may be trying hard and getting nothing back. People who do not suit you may be rising around you. The cause is not always you; the times themselves are blocked.

In this situation the wisest course is to step back without wasting your strength. Trying to win acceptance in a discordant setting wears you out. A position or money gained by compromising your values later becomes a heavy burden. Turn inward, stay loyal to what you know is right, narrow your circle and keep it to those you can trust. Standstill does not last forever. When the right time comes, those who help bring change are the ones who managed to stay clean in this period. Waiting now is the condition for being able to act later. When you pass through this time patiently, quietly and honestly, the blockage begins to loosen by itself. Turning inward, quietly developing your skills and preparing for the future will gain you a great deal now.

What to do now

Do not compromise; step back and protect what you know is right.

Love and relationships

Communication in the relationship may have broken off or cooled. Trying to force closeness makes things worse. Turn to yourself, get clear on what you want and wait for the right time.

Work and money

The work environment is blocked, and your effort may go unseen. Do not be tempted by offers that bend the rules or by promises of easy money. Cut expenses and postpone risky moves.

The lines

If a line changed (red) in your reading, read only that line. Lines are counted from the bottom up.

  1. First line

When you pull up ribbon grass, the soil comes with its roots. Withdrawing together with those like you and persevering brings good fortune and success.

  2. Second line

Enduring and yielding. For small people this is good; the great person accepts the standstill, protects themselves and later reaches success.

  3. Third line

Bearing shame. Noticing the weight of a place gained unjustly is the first step of change.

  4. Fourth line

Whoever acts by the will of the one above makes no mistake. If you answer a true call, those beside you also share in the blessing.

  5. Fifth line

The standstill is giving way, and there is good fortune for the great person. But keep asking, what if it fails; hold your work firm, as if tied to a cluster of mulberry shoots.

  6. Top line

The standstill comes to an end. First there was blockage, now joy arrives.
